ALTAR TO ARCHITECT COMPLETELY UNCONTROVERSIAL

An altar dedicated to the architect Christopher Alexander at the 1st Annual Exhibition by the Kent Furnituremakers Network at the Metropole Galleries, Folkestone was on show for six weeks without anyone commenting or complaining.

The altar consists of a small footprint workbench made from sycamore, oak and car body filler on top of which sit two lingams made of bubinga and mahogany and a copy of Christopher Alexander et al's book A PATTERN LANGUAGE.

"I was a bit disappointed at the total lack of controversy it generated. I thought at least someone would be moved to complain it wasn't furniture", said the maker responsible Sajjad Afzal Woodward, exhibiting as Woodward Bros. "But then I saw some of the other stuff in the show and that led to the best and worst of competition."

At the exhibition and now online at www.worldsystema.com, people are being asked to cast their votes for the best and the worst of the pieces in the show. "It is a legitimate question to ask what is good furniture. The intention is to spark serious debate about design and educate people on the role they can and should be playing in deciding what gets built into their environments. If in the process one less crap piece of furniture gets made, that's another tree saved."

"My hope is to continue to do honest work for enlightened commissioning, all in the spirit of Christopher Alexander's new book THE NATURE OF ORDER, which illuminates the structure of the universe and teaches that making wholeness both repairs the world and heals the maker",

"The competition has caused some fuss and I have been suspended from the KFN"
